Why “The Rico”?

The Rico is named in tribute to Rico Rodriguez, the legendary trombonist whose career provides a remarkable link between the original Jamaican ska sound and Britain’s 2-Tone generation.

Raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Rico learned trombone at the famous Alpha Boys School, where he was mentored by future Skatalites trombonist Don Drummond. He went on to become a highly respected session musician, recording with some of the producers and musicians who were helping to shape Jamaican music during its formative years.

Rico moved to Britain in the early 1960s and became an important part of the Jamaican music scene developing here. His distinctive trombone could be heard across ska, rocksteady and reggae, including on the original recording of A Message to You Rudy.

More than a decade later, when ska exploded again in Britain through the 2-Tone movement, Rico was there once more. He joined The Specials in the studio and on stage, playing on their version of A Message to You Rudy and providing the haunting trombone heard on Ghost Town.

From the foundations of Jamaican ska to the streets of 2-Tone Britain, few musicians connect the different generations of the music quite like Rico Rodriguez.

Calling this shirt The Rico is our tribute to one of ska’s great musicians – and to a man whose trombone became part of the soundtrack to British subculture.

Authentic Subculture Style

Rude Rebel Clothing is a small, independent, family-run UK clothing brand based in the North-East of England. We’re not looking at subculture from the outside – we’ve been part of the ska scene for decades, from fanzines and websites to gigs, festivals and everything in between.

Our shirts are designed for people who share that culture. Skinheads, mods, rude boys, ska fans and anyone who appreciates sharp British subculture clothing with a bit of history behind it.

Produced in limited runs, once a particular design or colour is gone, we can’t guarantee it’ll return.
