Why “The Desmond”?
The Desmond is named in tribute to Desmond Dekker, one of the great pioneers of Jamaican music and one of the first artists to take the sounds of ska, rocksteady and reggae to a truly international audience.
Born Desmond Dacres in Jamaica, Dekker began recording with legendary producer Leslie Kong in the early 1960s. By the middle of the decade he had established himself as one of Jamaica’s leading performers, but it was 007 (Shanty Town) that helped introduce him – and the emerging Jamaican sound – to a much wider British audience.
Released in 1967, 007 drew on Jamaica’s growing rude boy culture and became Dekker’s first major international hit. Two years later came the record that would make him a household name: Israelites. The song reached number one in the UK in 1969 and became one of the earliest Jamaican recordings to achieve huge international success.
For many young people in Britain, Desmond Dekker was an introduction to Jamaican music. His records became favourites among mods and the emerging skinhead scene, helping Jamaican ska and reggae become an inseparable part of British subculture.
His influence didn’t end with the 1960s. When ska exploded again in Britain with the 2-Tone generation, Dekker’s music and legacy were embraced by a new audience, reinforcing the connection between the original Jamaican sound and the British ska scene that followed.
Calling this shirt The Desmond is our tribute to one of Jamaican music’s great trailblazers – a man who helped carry the sound of Jamaica across the Atlantic and into the heart of British subculture.
Authentic British Subculture Style
Rude Rebel Clothing is a small, independent, family-run UK clothing brand based in the North-East of England. We’re not looking at subculture from the outside – we’ve been part of the ska scene for decades, from fanzines and websites to gigs, festivals and everything in between.
Our shirts are designed for people who share that culture. Skinheads, mods, rude boys, ska fans and anyone who appreciates sharp British subculture clothing with a bit of history behind it.
Produced in limited runs, once a particular design or colour is gone, we can’t guarantee it’ll return.
